Taiwan Affairs Spokesman Urges Resumption of Cross-Straits Talks
2001-12-27

BEIJING, December 26 (Xinhuanet) -- Zhang Mingqing, spokesman for
the Taiwan Affairs Office of China's State Council, Wednesday
urged the Taiwan authorities to make choices which are conducive
to the resumption of cross-straits talks with the mainland.

Zhang said at a press conference here that cross-straits
dialogue can be resumed at any time providing the Taiwan
authorities accept the One-China Principle and recognize the 1992
cross-straits consensus.

Some Taiwan officials have repeatedly gone against both the
principle and the consensus, which has made it impossible to
resume talks, said Zhang when answering journalists' questions on
the possible resumption of cross-straits talks next year.

He told reporters that the Taiwan authorities' sincerity will
be shown by the recognition of the 1992 cross-straits consensus,
which sets the precondition for the One-China Principle in cross-
straits talks.

It has been widely supported by Taiwan people with insight that
flexibility when seeking common points is possible and differences
can be dealt with through negotiations under the One-China
Principle, Zhang pointed out.

He said the central government welcomes any endeavors which
accept that precondition.

He reiterated that the central government's one-China stand is
unwavering, and its efforts to resume cross-straits talks will be
continued. The Taiwan authorities should abandon illusions and
face reality in order to make wise choices on the matter.
