AIR QUALITY - Facts Yibin: air quality keeps improving in the first 9 months (October 23, 2008) According to the data from the environmental monitoring center of Yibin city, Sichuan province, the air quality keeps improving in the first 9 months of this year. - Initiatives MEP to broadcast urban air quality everyday (October 24, 2008) Yesterday (October 22), the website of the data center of MEP was open to the public, and started to broadcast urban air quality daily and showed the best 10 city with good air quality. The data center focuses on data, tables and figures, which will help to demonstrate air quality rank of all cities in our country vividly. Beijing implements the 15th phrase of Air Pollution Control Measures (October 23, 2008) Recently, Beijing government has formulated and started to implement the 15th phrase of Air Pollution Control Measures to build the air quality improvement system in the long term. Dongguan: 3 monitoring stations to be used (October 21, 2008) Based on the information from Dongguan EPB, the city government will start to monitor air quality by 3 new monitoring stations. The new stations are laid on Xiping in south city, Shijing in east city and Wanjiang Jianyong. These stations will be used to monitor SO2, NO2, NO, O3 and PM10 in the air of Dongguan city. ENERGY - Facts Xingtai becomes the first solar energy construction city (October 26, 2008) Yesterday, Xingtai city of Hebei province awarded the tablet of "Solar Energy Construction City" issued by China Association of Resources Comprehensive Utilization of renewable energy professional committees, China Rural Energy Industry Association Professional Committee of the use of solar thermal, China Renewable Energy Society of Professional Committee of the construction of solar energy. The usage of solar energy saved more than 10 thousand tones of standard coal, reduced more than 6800 tones SO2 and dust and saved electricity 33 million KWh. PetroChina to increase investment in oil, gas (October 21, 2008) BEIJING - PetroChina Company Limited will increase its investment in its oil and gas business from 60 to 70 percent in 2009, said company chairman Jiang Jiemin on Tuesday. PetroChina's losses during the global financial crisis are "limited and under control", Jiang told reporters after a shareholders meeting. He said it's because the company has focused the majority of its business on oil and gas production and exploration in the past few years. China to launch survey of energy conservation measures (October 20, 2008) China's government is to conduct a nationwide survey of efforts by local governments to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. The government has set a target of reducing energy consumption per unit of gross domestic product (GDP) by 20 percent and major pollutant emissions by 10 percent from the 2005 levels by 2010, in a bid to protect environment and insure a sustainable development. "However, the country still faces great difficulties in fulfilling the commitment, and the situation remains arduous," said National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) deputy director Xie Zhenhua on Monday. Spain to loan China $460 million (October 24, 2008) Spain signed an agreement with China on Thursday to lend up to 360 million euros ($460.5 million) to China between 2008 and 2010. Of the total, 20 million euros will be used to help the reconstruction in Sichuan after the 8.0-magnitude earthquake hit the region on May 12, according to an inter-government fiscal cooperation agreement signed by the Minister of Finance Xie Xuren and the Spanish Minister of Industry, Tourism and Commerce Miguel Sebastian Gascon on Thursday. The 20 million euro unconditional loan to Sichuan would mainly be used for environment projects, urban infrastructure construction, energy-saving and emission reduction, the Ministry of Finance said on its website. Climate change talks 'must continue' (October 24, 2008) China and Denmark discussed cooperation on climate change issues during a meeting in Beijing yesterday. Addressing the meeting, Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen said the current global economic crisis should not be a cause for delaying action on climate change. 69% of Chinese willing to shift lifestyle for climate (October 21, 2008) BEIJING -- Up to 69 percent of Chinese consumers surveyed are willing to change their lifestyles so as to help with global efforts to slow down the climate change, according to a latest survey.
