Israel Hayom Publishes an Op-Ed of Ambassador Du Wei

On April 2, 2020, Israel Hayom, Israel's largest-circulating Hebrew newspaper, published an Op-Ed of Ambassador Du Wei, entitled “Collaboration is the Cure for the Virus” (Ambassador’s original titile is “Unity and Cooperation are the Best Weapons Agaisnt the Disease” ). The full text is as follows:

As the new Chinese Ambassador to Israel, I took my post in an extraordinary time. Like every other Israeli friend, I have been following closely with the situation of the COVID-19. The disease is a huge challenge to public health across the world, and the best weapons we have in our hands are unity and cooperation.

Two months ago, the virus was wreaking havoc in China. Under the leadership of President Xi Jinping, the whole Chinese nation has taken the most decisive and thorough measures to contain the virus. With its speed, China has bought time for the international community to enhance preparedness; with its forceful response, China has served as a strong line of defense against the spread of the epidemic.

The WHO-China Joint Mission, an expert group with members from Canada, United States, Germany, Japan, South Korea, Russia and more, concludes after their field study in China that “China has changed the course of a rapidly escalating and deadly epidemic...creating a stronger first line of defense against the international spread. ”

Nobel laureate Michael Levitt, an American-British-Israeli biophysicist, said that “China did great work and managed to gain complete control of the virus.”

However, China was not alone in the fight against the disease. Israel, as well as 170 countries and 40 international and regional organizations, has sent sympathies and provided us with valuable support. The Chinese people will never forget it.

Now, the disease is emerging and spreading across the world. Israel is also impacted. I want to tell our Israeli friends that China has the same feeling of what you are going through. Confronted by the COVID-19, China will neither flinch nor just mind its own business.

Recently, Chinese medical experts in Wuhan had two sessions of video conference with Israeli doctors and experts. They had a great sharing of the experiences fighting the disease. China plans to work according to Israeli demands and organize more such knowledge-sharing events, to contribute to Israel’s anti-virus efforts.

Moreover, China—the world factory—is sparing no efforts to resume full power and increase output. We will overcome the existing difficulties and strive to meet the demands of Israel and other countries in terms of medical equipment and supplies.

COVID-19 is a virus that has never been seen in human history. China has acted with openness, transparency and a sense of responsibility since the start of the outbreak and has been sharing information and cooperating with the global community in a responsible manner. Alarmingly, some people are attempting to politicize the epidemic, put a label on the virus and stigmatize China. Such moves are extremely harmful to international cooperation and solidarity, and will only disrupt the joint efforts of various parties to tackle the virus. It is believed that the world, including Israel, will respond objectively and fairly and reject such narrow-minded actions.

The Chinese and the Jewish nations have endured profound suffering in history, but we have all risen after setbacks and are marching toward national rejuvenation. The fight against the epidemic will only toughen the resilience in our national characters and bring us to an even broader future.

Severe as the situation may be, confidence is most valuable; tough as the job may seem, hope lies ahead. After a two-month struggle in China, the whole country is slowly turning back to normal, and the lockdown of Wuhan is scheduled to be removed very soon. It should be a beacon of hope for everyone to solidify their confidence.

As long as we remain calm and work together with the government, the wise and optimistic people of Israel will prevail over the disease; and as long as the international community stays united, humanity will triumph over any difficulties or challenges coming our way. I have every confidence in Israel and beyond.

When the disease is over, I look forward to having more opportunities to work with Israeli friends to open a new page of the Innovative Comprehensive Partnership between China and Israel.
